The asking of an Oral Question in the House of Commons is the end of a lengthy process. First the MP tables (gives notice) of his or her question giving a minimum period of notice of three days so that the Minister being questioned has time to prepare an answer. Notices of questions are printed as part of the daily 'Vote Bundle'. All questions tabled to a particular department are then subject to a random computer shuffle. Successful questions will be asked on the relevant day and the MP will also be able to ask a supplementary question. The minister will answer both the original and the supplementary question in the Chamber, in person.
