Ecclesiastical Committee

The Ecclesiastical Committee examines draft measures presented to it by the Legislative Committee of the General Synod which is the national assembly of the Church of England. The Ecclesiastical Committee reports to Parliament on whether or not it considers the measures to be appropriate. The Committee was set up under the Church of England Assembly (Powers) Act 1919 and consists of 15 Members of the House of Commons nominated by the Speaker, and an equal number from the Lords nominated by the Lord Chancellor. Members are appointed shortly after the beginning of each Parliament and serve for the whole Parliament. The Committee may not amend General Synod Measures which form the legislation of the Church of England but a report is presented to both Houses for approval and sent for Royal Assent if passed. General Synod Measures are noted at the end of the Public Bill list.
