Undergraduate Sandwich Student Placements

The Sandwich Student Scheme is an opportunity for undergraduate students to work within the House of Commons, offering a unique insight into governance and the running of Parliament in general. Students must be enrolled on a four year degree which allows you to complete a Sandwich placement on your third year of study.

Applications for the 2016/17 Sandwich Student Scheme have now closed.

What placements are being offered?

The House of Commons Service offered numerous placements in the academic year 2016/17 for Sandwich course students.

The Department of Chamber and Committee Services.

This is a research based placement supporting one or two Select Committees within the Committee Support Service in the Department of Chamber & Committee Services.

The Department of Information Services.

Parliamentary Outreach - The purpose of this placement is to support the Project Manager with the running of the new ‘Universities Workstream’ and usual departmental business.

Social and General Statistics - This is a statistics based placement supporting the Social and General Statistics arm of Information Services. The successful student will assist the section’s statisticians in their work and conduct research for topics depending on events and interests in Parliament.

The Department of Facilities.

The Department of Facilities will be offering three placements. The positions will be within the Building Maintenance Team and the Projects Delivery Team.

What do we offer?

The placements in the Department of Information Services and Department of Facilities offer placements that last for 48 weeks. The placement in the Department of Chamber & Committee Services lasts for 40 weeks. All placements will commence in September/October 2016.

Each placement offers a unique insight into its area of specialism, as well as the workings of the House of Commons and Parliament in general. Not only will each student get involved in the day-to-day work required of the sections they work in, they will also be engaged in a number of additional and educational projects.
The House offers a wide variety of learning opportunities, job-specific, developmental, formal and informal. These include formal in-house training, on-the-job training, and opportunities for coaching and mentoring.

The benefits of a placement with the House of Commons are outlined below:

  • 18 days paid leave
  • 8 bank holidays
  • Up to 12 days study leave*
  • A salary of £17,274 per annum
  • Access to learning and development opportunities
  • An open and supporting environment

* Pro rata dependent on the number of weeks worked in each department.

The placement scheme is analogous to that in the Civil Service and the remuneration paid to sandwich course students whilst serving at the House of Commons will be similar to that paid to students undertaking placements in the Civil Service. The conditions of service of staff of the House are kept broadly in line with those of the Home Civil Service and many of these will also apply to the Sandwich placements.
