Welcome to the Public Accounts Commission website.
The role of the Public Accounts Commission is defined by the National Audit Act 1983. The Commission's principal duties under the Act are to examine the National Audit Office Estimates, to consider reports from the appointed auditor of the National Audit Office, and to report from time to time.
The Comptroller and Auditor General provides continuing advice to the Commission on these resource issues. But since by statute the Comptroller and Auditor General has "complete discretion in the discharge of his functions", the Commission does not involve itself in the day to day running or administration of the National Audit Office.

- The Commission considered the Government's draft clauses on the corporate governance of the NAO on 16 December.
- The Commission approved additional funding of £5.8 million for the project to refurbish the NAO's headquarters on 28 October.
- The Commission published on 24 July draft clauses on the corporate governance of the National Audit Office (HC 1027). The draft clauses would implement the proposals made by the Commission in its response to John Tiner's review, and are proposed as the basis for clauses in the Government's planned Constitutional Renewal Bill.
- The Commission approved the NAO's Corporate Plan for 2009-10 to 2010-11 on 2 July.
- The Commission published on 6 March its response to John Tiner’s review of the corporate governance of the NAO (HC 402). The report responds to his proposals for a statutory NAO Board and Chairman and for revised terms and conditions for the Comptroller and Auditor General ( including a term limit).
- The Commission published the Review of the Corporate Governance of the NAO by John Tiner as an appendix to its 14th report.
Public meetings
The Commission's practice is to hold its twice-yearly scrutiny sessions with the NAO in public.
