Parliamentary Education Unit


The Parliamentary Education Unit provides the following services for both the House of Commons and the House of Lords:
  • The answering of enquiries from teachers and young people
  • Liaison with educational bodies and organisations
  • Occasional visits to schools, teachers' conferences, etc.
  • The provision of resources about Parliament's work

A leaflet giving further details can be obtained on request.

Written Resources

The Education Sheet series is aimed at GCSE students and sixth-formers with a general interest in Parliament's work.

The titles in the series are:

Education sheets may be obtained free from the Parliamentary Education Unit, either singly or in class sets (32 of each). (Class sets are available to UK postal addresses only, but the set may be reproduced for the purposes of private study, research or educational use without permission.)

A booklet, The Speaker of the House of Commons is also available and this too can be used for teaching purposes.

For younger children (9-13) two booklets, The Palace of Westminster: A Guide for Young People and The Work of an MP are available.

A Guide to Parliament, written and produced by The Stationery Office for 12-15 year olds, provides a general explanation about Parliament, Government and MPs.

Material on Big Ben and the Clock Tower is also available.

 



Wallcharts

A set of six Wallcharts can be obtained by teachers free from the Parliamentary Education Unit.

People and Parliament - 'a 'Stranger's' guide to Westminster'

Video

Designed to appeal to students from the age of 14 upwards, this 57 minute video attempts to answer the question "What's Parliament got to do with me?"

CD Rom

Designed to either complement the video or to be used independently, the CD Rom has the following sections:

  • Time Machine
  • The House of Lords
  • The House of Commons
  • The Palace of Westminster
  • The Parliamentary Day
  • Great Parliamentarians
  • Quiz Questions

Inside Britain's Parliament

This 25 minute video aimed at 10-14 year olds provides a basic introduction for younger students to the work of Parliament. The video is accompanied by a workbook providing support materials for teachers which is suitable for use to help with the delivery of relevant aspects of proposed citizenship elements at Key Stages 2 and 3.

The pack is available from the Parliamentary Bookshop, price £23.90 inclusive of postage and packing.

Internet

Designed with the UK curricular in mind 'Explore Parliament' has a number of features designed for on- or off-line use, an extensive Parliamentary database and a range of teacher support resources. Links are provided to the Parliamentary Education Unit's written resources, to Parliament's home page and to other relevant sites.
