Placements

Each placement offers a unique insight into its area of specialism, as well as the workings of the House of Commons and Parliament in general. Not only will each student get involved in the day-to-day work required of the sections they work in, they will also be engaged in a number of additional and educational projects.

The House offers a wide variety of learning opportunities, job-specific, developmental, formal and informal. These include formal in-house training, on-the-job training, and opportunities for coaching and mentoring.

Benefits

The benefits of a placement with the House of Commons are outlined below:

  • 18 days paid leave
  • 8 Bank Holidays
  • Up to 12 days paid study leave*
  • A salary of £16,174 per annum
  • Access to learning and development opportunities
  • An open and supportive environment

* Pro rata dependent on the number of weeks worked in each department.

The placement scheme is analogous to that in the Civil Service and the remuneration paid to sandwich course students whilst serving at the House of Commons will be similar to that paid to students undertaking placements in the Civil Service. The conditions of service of staff of the House are kept broadly in line with those of the Home Civil Service and many of these will also apply to the Sandwich placements.
