Decarbonising heat production is likely to play a major role in fulfilling the Government’s commitment to an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. Energy for heating contributes roughly 40% of the UK’s total energy use and 20% of its emissions. This POSTnote examines the role that alternative gases, such as hydrogen and biomethane, might play in low-carbon heating.
