Preventing Mitochondrial Disease

MPs will debate new techniques to prevent mitochondrial disease today in Westminster Hall.

POST Board member Chi Onwurah MP is hosting a Westminster Hall debate on new techniques for preventing mitochondrial disease at 4:00 pm today. Mitochondria convert biological fuels like sugars and fats into the energy a cell needs. Women with a disease caused by faulty mitochondria pass their condition on to their children. Researchers are developing treatments to prevent this by using healthy mitochondria from a female donor. POSTnote 431, Preventing Mitochondrial Disease describes these new treatments and looks at the issues raised by their potential use in IVF. The note can be downloaded from POST’s website (click here (PDF PDF 614 KB)) and hard copies are available from the Members Library in the Palace.
