The Natural Capital Initiative recently brought together over 250 delegates from across academia, policy, business, and civil society to assess progress in conceptualising natural capital, and the valuation of natural capital for planning and decision-making based on sound science. The ‘Valuing our Life Support Systems’ summit report summarises the findings of the meeting and recommendations for future activity.
Natural capital includes all elements of nature that are valuable for people; it is the essential underpinning of both our health and the economy. The natural capital concept enables us to make better planning and policy decisions that take into account both economics and the environment. The valuation of natural capital provides important information for policy and business to prioritise investments, identify conservation priorities and develop sustainable business models. Natural capital is being incorporated into UK policy strategies and is gaining traction in business; however many science, ethical and practical challenges remain.
