One fifth of children are overweight or obese when they begin school, and this figure increases to one third by the time they leave primary school. Obesity prevalence among children in both Reception and Year 6 also increases with increased socioeconomic deprivation. The long-awaited childhood obesity plan was published in August 2016, but concerns have been raised as to whether the government’s plan for action will significantly reduce childhood obesity.

A summary of the discussion at the event is available here.

This seminar will take the form of a panel discussion, chaired by Maggie Throup MP, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Adult and Childhood Obesity, with leading experts from research and questions from the audience. Discussion will focus on the strengths and weaknesses of the government’s plan for action, what more needs to be done and how best to assess what’s working and what’s not. Questions and comments ahead of the event are invited through the hashtag #POSTobesity.
