Securing land rights for women in Southern and East Africa

On 8 February 2012, CPA UK held the first lecture in its 2012 programme, considering the subject of women's land rights in Southern and East Africa

Featuring perspectives from speakers representing academia, NGOs and civil society, the lecture explored an issue of great pertinence to many Commonwealth parliamentarians.

Coinciding with the visit of a delegation of Ugandan Parliamentarians, and taking Uganda as a case study, it sparked lively debate on the success of measures so far and the best course for the future.

Speakers included:

  • Dr Elizabeth Daley, Consultant, Mokoro Ltd
  • Ruchi Tripathi, Head of Right to Food, ActionAid International
  • Simon Levine, Research Fellow, ODI

Chair: Heidi Alexander MP, PPS to Mary Creagh as Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs

A visiting delegation of MPs from the Parliament of Uganda also attended the lecture, and members were able to give an insight into their first-hand experiences of this issue.
