Empowering women as agents of social, economic and political change

The Commonwealth theme of 2011 was ‘Women as Agents of Change,’ in a year that also saw the centenary of International Women’s Day, marking a century of international cooperation to achieve equality between women and men

Held in advance of the 57th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference later in July, this lecture gave a taste of the discussion to be held on this key conference topic.

This lecture explored the levels of empowerment of women across the Commonwealth, and discussed what more the UK and other Commonwealth countries could do, on both a domestic and an international level, to empower women to drive progress in society.

Speaking at the lecture were:

  • Dr Dhananjayan Sriskandarajah, Director of the Royal Commonwealth Society and Interim Director of the Commonwealth Foundation
  • Rt Hon. the Baroness D'Souza CMG, Convenor of the Crossbench Peers and Vice Chair of the APPG on Women, Peace and Security

Chair: Dr Roberta Blackman-Woods MP, CPA UK Vice Chair, Shadow Minister for Civil Society and Labour Member for the City of Durham
