From 30 January-2 February 2012, CPA UK hosted two delegations of Whips for a multilateral programme designed to explore the role of the Whip in Ghana, Kenya and the UK.
Six Whips from the Ghanaian Parliament and two from the Kenyan Parliament took part in a four-day programme featuring meetings with Rt Hon. Patrick McLoughlin MP, Government Chief Whip; Rt Hon. Alistair Carmichael MP, Government Deputy Chief Whip; and Rt Hon. Rosie Winterton MP, Opposition Chief Whip.
They also met other senior parliamentary figures including: Rt Hon. Sir George Young Bt MP, Leader of the House; Hon. Lindsay Hoyle MP, Deputy Speaker, and Mr Robert Rogers, Clerk of the House.
They also took part in more general sessions examining the role of MPs and topical issues such as climate change and gender. One of the highlights of the week was a meeting with Peter Horrocks, Director of the BBC World Service and BBC Global News at the BBC World Service, to discuss the relationship between parliament and the media.
CPA UK is developing a long-term parliamentary strengthening programme with the parliament of Ghana.
