A welcome message from Rt Hon. Sir Alan Haselhurst MP, Chairperson of the CPA International and CPA UK Executive Committees.
As Chair of the CPA International Executive Committees and the CPA UK, I warmly welcome you to the Commonwealth Youth Parliament website. My colleagues and I hope that you find the information it contains useful. All members of the CPA Secretariat and CPA UK teams are here to help, so please do not hesitate to get in touch.
We greatly look forward to welcoming some 90 Commonwealth Youth Parliamentarians to Westminster this September, as well as an equal number of Commonwealth Diaspora Parliamentarians from the UK for part of the programme.
In this, the CPA’s centennial year, it is particularly fitting to turn our attention to the future of the CPA by engaging with young people who will one day be the leaders and legislators of the Commonwealth. We hope the CYP will help to impart the importance of parliamentary democracy to a new generation.
The keynote subject for the CYP is climate change, a challenge shared by every CPA member parliament equally, from highly developed nations to fast-growing economies like India, Malaysia and Singapore, to countries in Asia, the Caribbean, the Indian and Pacific Oceans which already suffer from the impacts of climate change with more frequent flooding and hurricanes, and rising sea-levels.
This headline debate will take place in the House of Lords Chamber. It will be only the fifth time it has been used by non-parliamentarians, bearing testimony to the commitment of the Houses of Parliament, CPA UK and the CPA Secretariat both to the topic as well as to parliamentary outreach.
We anticipate this to be a very exciting and stimulating event which will promote and encourage dialogue amongst the youth of the Commonwealth. Our combined hope is to enable long-lasting Commonwealth links to be forged and maintained.
