Northern Ireland outreach

The Northern Ireland Parliamentary Outreach service aims to create awareness of the work of Parliament and show how the debates and decisions of the House of Commons and House of Lords are relevant to the area.

The Parliamentary Outreach service also promotes engagement with the processes of Parliament, demonstrating how the public can get involved at a local and national level.

Working with Parliamentary Outreach

In partnership with organisations such as the Northern Ireland Council for Voluntary Action and Electoral Commission Northern Ireland, Parliamentary Outreach organises and participates in free training sessions, events and exhibitions.

Devolution and excepted powers

The Northern Ireland Assembly has responsibility for a number of matters (known as devolved matters). These include health, education, housing and policing

Excepted matters are matters that will remain the responsibility of the UK Parliament. These include:

  • International relations
  • Defence and foreign policy
  • Taxation
  • Immigration and asylum
Northern Ireland Affairs Committee

The Northern Ireland Affairs Committee is a select committee of the House of Commons.

It examines the expenditure, administration and policy of the Northern Ireland Office and other matters within the responsibilities of the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.
