Create the Debate offers your students the chance to develop their debating skills in the classroom throughout the year, and is a way to get your school involved in Parliament Week each year.
The pack includes suggested debate topics, tips for improving debating skills and further information about the procedure for carrying out debates at the Houses of Parliament.
Secondary schools can debate any of the top five topics voted for this year by over 500,000 young people across the UK through the Make Your Mark campaign run by the UK youth Parliament.
BBC Free Speech, the BBC’s live debate show for young people, has made five online videos introducing each topic:
Votes for 16 and 17 year olds: 16 and 17 year olds should be eligible to vote in all UK elections and referendums
Better work experience and careers advice: Schools should provide opportunities for all young people (13-18 years old) to participate in external work experience and offer access to a professionally trained careers advisor
Combating youth unemployment: Every local authority with youth unemployment of 20% or more should out into place a strategy based around developing work skills, investing in jobs, apprenticeships and internships and offering practical advice such as CV writing
Zero tolerance towards school bullying: Schools should create bullying policies written by students in consultation with teachers and professionals, offer advice and peer support for both the victim and the bully and deliver better training for staff
A curriculum to prepare us for life: Citizenship education should be radically overhauled through a youth-led review to ensure it teaches vital life skills. Teaching staff should be trained to a national citizenship education standard following the review outcomes.
