These lesson plans are ideal for explaining the history of Bonfire Night and it's connection to Parliament. The first of the two sessions focuses on the key facts of the story of the Gunpowder Plot, whilst the second session allows students to discuss and explore the motivations of the people involved and look at the story from more than one point of view.
Time required: 2x 60 minute sessions
This lesson plan supports the History and Citizenship curricula for students aged 7-11.
All students should:
- be able to describe the key facts of the Gunpowder Plot
- learn about the influence of a significant individual from history
- understand differences in beliefs and attitudes between the time of the Gunpowder Plot and the present day
- express their opinion about the method the plotters decided to take to bring about change.
Most students should:
- understand that there are different perspectives on the story and have considered the plot from these different points of view.
- be able to suggest what sort of action people should take if they want to bring about change responsibly.
Some students should:
- be able to present a balanced case by offering justifications for the behaviour of the characters on both sides as well as give their own opinion on it.
Note: This lesson plan touches upon some sensitive topics such as religious intolerance, torture and capital punishment.
