Description

This front-of-classroom tool challenges your students to learn about the electoral process by setting up a political party, preparing a manifesto, running a campaign, and then holding their own classroom election.

The resource includes a quick quiz about the electoral process, to introduce key terms and concepts, before guiding students through the role playing exercise. It is accompanied by a worksheet for students, available to download below.

Three levels of difficulty allow you to tailor the activity to suit your students. The link to level 3 (above) is aimed at students aged 14-16. For younger age groups select the link for level 1 or 2 in the Supporting Resources section below.

Learning outcomes

This resource supports political literacy components of the curriculum around the UK. It also supports speaking and listening components of the English language curriculum.

Students will learn to:

  • Explore the general election process through role-play
  • Understand key terms such as constituencies, candidates, polling stations, political parties, manifestoes, and coalitions
  • Consider different areas of policy and set priorities
  • Discover different methods of campaigning
  • Practice their communication skills by writing and delivering a campaign speech

Practical information

This classroom presentation tool is optimised for use on interactive whiteboards. It requires Flash Player 9 or above and Javascript to be enabled.
