Elections and Voting - whiteboard resource

This free teaching resource will help your students understand the process of a UK general election and how the decisions that voters make decide how their country is run.

Description

The resource includes a short introductory quiz followed by three activities:

  • 'Going to the polls' invites students to hold a classroom election
  • 'Compare the vote' helps them to compare different voting systems
  • 'Results are in' explores how votes translate into ‘seats’ in the House of Commons

Three levels of difficulty allow you to tailor the activities to suit your students.

Learning outcomes

At level one, students will learn to:

  • Understand the main features of democracy in the UK, including general elections and the work of MPs
  • Define key terms such as constituencies, candidates, polling stations, political parties, manifestoes and coalitions
  • Compare the first past the post voting system with a proportional system (the party list system)
  • Translate votes into ‘seats’ in the House of Commons and explore different election outcomes
  • Explore the general election process through role-play

At level two, students will also learn to:

  • Compare the alternative vote with the other voting systems above
  • Compare UK and EU electoral systems
  • Explore general elections in more depth

At level three, students will also learn to:

  • Compare the single transferable vote with the other voting systems above
  • Compare UK and US electoral systems
  • Define further key terms such as backbenchers, ministers, and the hung Parliament

This classroom presentation tool is optimised for use on interactive whiteboards.  It requires Flash Player 9 or above and Javascript to be enabled. Walkthrough guides are available to download below, to help you make the most of the resource. Downloadable worksheets are also available for students to accompany each of the activities.
