Description


These lesson plans, along with a supporting presentation and resources which can be downloaded at the bottom of this page, guide your class through discussions about existing laws, how they could be made better, and ideas for new laws. Through discussion and debate, students then explore the legislative process and the importance of scrutiny when new laws are made.

 

Time required: 2 x 60 minute lessons

Learning outcomes

Lesson 1

All students should:

 

  • know that a key function of Parliament is to make and amend legislation.

 

Most students should:

 

  • have expressed their own opinions to others through discussion, formal debate and voting.
  • understand that a draft law goes through many stages within Parliament before becoming a law and that these stages allow all Members of Parliament to contribute to the shaping of that law.

 

Some students should:

 

  • be able to describe the main stages a bill goes through before becoming a law.
  • have engaged with and reflected on different ideas, opinions, beliefs and values when exploring a topical/controversial issue.

 

Lesson 2

All students should:

 

  • know that a draft law is called a bill and that it must pass through several stages in Parliament before becoming a law or Act of Parliament.
  • have engaged with and reflected on different ideas, opinions, beliefs and values when exploring a topical / controversial issue.

 

Most students should:

 

  • have expressed and explained their own opinion through discussions, formal debates and voting.
  • understand the importance of the stages of a bill passing through Parliament as a democratic process so that Members of Parliament can comment on and contribute to the legislative process preventing the majority party pushing laws through unchecked. 

Some students should:

 

  • be able to critically evaluate the main features of the legislative process and describe some advantages and disadvantages.
