COST OF NUCLEAR DETERRENCE

  • Session: 2012-13
  • Date tabled: 28.02.2013
  • Primary sponsor: Galloway, George
  • Sponsors:

That this House notes that renewing the Trident fleet will cost at least £25 billion; disagrees with former Minister for Security and Counter Terrorism, Lord West that any alternative would undermine the UK's national security; further notes that the so-called independent deterrent is a misdescription as it is almost entirely dependent on US weaponry and technology; asks who this massively expensive missile system is supposed to deter; believes categorically that the proposed cost of £25 billion is completely unaffordable even it if was desirable in this period of austerity; and calls on the Government to scrap Trident and any plans to renew the fleet.
