That this House is deeply saddened by the recent death of the world-renowned conductor, Sir Charles Mackerras, at the age of 84 years after a lengthy battle with cancer; appreciates his outstanding contribution to music in Britain, being the President of Trinity College of Music and the Honorary President of Edinburgh International Festival Society and conducting various orchestras such as the BBC Concert Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra; notes that he was admired in numerous countries for his varied interpretations of music, including the Czech Republic, where he became principal guest conductor for life of the Czech Philharmonic and from whom he received the Medal of Merit in 1996; applauds his bravery and commitment during his battle with cancer as he was due to conduct works at the BBC Proms at the end of July 2010; and agrees that he will be tremendously missed internationally, particularly as his links are to the Commonwealth, Australia and the EU.
