DURHAM MINERS' GALA

That this House congratulates the officials and staff of the Durham Miners for the work in organising and delivering the 126th Durham Miners' Gala; notes that once again this event attracted tens of thousands of people who lined the streets to celebrate their mining heritage and to watch the parade featuring miners and trades union banners with colliery bands, before listening to the political speakers at the old racecourse; further notes the significance of the Miners' service which is held in Durham Cathedral; recognises that the first Durham Miners' Gala was held in 1871; believes that this is the largest trade union and labour gathering in the UK; and hopes that this event will continue for many years to come.
