PREVENTION OF DIABETES

That this House recognises that diabetes is one of the biggest health challenges currently facing the UK with 5.1 per cent. of the population suffering; acknowledges the rise in sufferers of the condition from 1.4 million in 1996 to 2.6 million last year, with estimations of a further increase to four million by 2025; notes with concern the tremendous cost of the condition to the NHS with it utilising 10 per cent. of the 2007-08 budget, equivalent to £173 million per week, £25 million per day or £286 per second; and calls on the Government to increase efforts to raise the public's awareness of diabetes, its complications and the ways in which it can be prevented.
