FLAG OF TOKELAU

That this House commends the government of Tokelau, a territory of New Zealand since 1926, previously a British protectorate since 1877 and which today remains one of Her Majesty's realms, in commissioning a new flag to represent their coral atolls of the South Pacific; acknowledges the people of Tokelau for their patriotism and sense of identity in adopting their own flag as a symbol, not only of the territory's links to New Zealand through the prominence of the Southern Cross, but also the culture of Tokelau through the depiction of a full sail canoe as a symbol of a viable and sustainable future; pays tribute to the Administrator of Tokelau, Mr David Payton for his work in creating the new flag; and despite the distance of more than 9,000 miles from British shores continues to uphold and cherish the historical bond between the peoples of Tokelau and the United Kingdom, which is strengthened by the common heritage in sharing Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, as Head of State and Sovereign.
