SMART METERING SYSTEMS

That this House welcomes the Government's commitment to smart metering in the Energy White Paper; notes that the use of smart metering systems can better engage consumers and suppliers by giving up to the minute information on energy usage whilst helping the environment and security of energy supply for the country; further notes that the use of smart metering systems with real time displays would allow accurate billing and two way communication and would be visually accessible to the consumer, with the net result that the UK would meet the Energy Services Directive to a far higher standard than would be achieved solely by the introduction of real time displays; is aware that there are safety concerns surrounding the introduction of real time displays; and calls on the Government not to miss out on the opportunity to introduce smart meters by ensuring that the technology is introduced by May 2008, in time to meet the Energy Services Directive.
