That this House notes with concern the terms of the consultation on the future of cross country services from Scotland to the South of England, and vice versa; notes in particular that these are popular routes with elderly people, young families and other social travellers; further notes that the consultation envisages an end to direct services and that in the future people will be required therefore to change at Birmingham or Crewe; regards this as a retrograde step; and calls on the Government to ensure that the new franchise will allow direct services between Scotland and the South of England.

leave out from `step;' to end and add `notes particularly the loss of through routes available to people wishing to travel between Scotland, the North West of England and the far South West and that passengers will now face a required change of service at either Birmingham New Street or Manchester, risking a modal shift from rail to either car or air; calls on the Government to ensure that the new rail franchise will allow direct services between Scotland and the whole of the South of England, including the South West.'.
