OSTEOPOROSIS SERVICES

  • Session: 2004-05
  • Date tabled: 07.12.2004
  • Primary sponsor: Austin, John

That this House welcomes the All Party Parliamentary Osteoporosis Group's report, Falling Short: delivering integrated falls and osteoporosis services in England which expresses concern that many primary care trusts (PCTs) appear unlikely to meet the milestones set out in Standard Six of the National Service Framework for Older People (NSF) by the April 2005 deadline; commends the Government's original commitment in the NSF to delivering integrated falls and osteoporosis services but now urges the Government to afford greater priority to osteoporosis by assisting and encouraging PCTs to implement Standard Six fully; further urges the Government to include osteoporosis in the Quality and Outcomes Framework of the General Medical Services Contract to ensure that high risk patients are identified and appropriately treated to prevent osteoporotic fractures; notes that at least one in two women and one in five men over the age of 50 years are affected by osteoporosis; and further notes that osteoporotic hip fractures alone currently cost the country ú1.7 billion each year and warns that without action from the Government to implement its own measures this figure will rise to ú2.1 billion by 2010.
