That this House welcomes the announcement in the Gracious Speech that the Government intends to introduce a Consumer Credit Bill in the current parliamentary session; notes that the proposed reform of the law on consumer credit has been the subject of lengthy consultation with consumer and money advice organisations, campaigners on debt and poverty, and the financial services industry and that as a result the proposals for reform have an overwhelming degree of support from a range of such bodies; and, given the length of time already undertaken in consultation and preparation and the urgent need for reform of the outdated laws on consumer credit, urges the Government to ensure that the proposed Consumer Credit Bill is introduced at a sufficiently early date to allow a successful passage through Parliament before dissolution, if this were to occur in 2005.
