INVESTMENT AND HUMAN RIGHTS IN BURMA

  • Session: 2002-03
  • Date tabled: 28.11.2002
  • Primary sponsor: Baird, Vera
  • Sponsors:

That this House condemns the brutal military regime in Burma and the continuing human rights violations committed under its name; recognises the legitimacy of the democratic election of the National League for Democracy and its leader Aung San Suu Kyi in 1990; regrets the continuing presence of British American Tobacco (BAT) in Burma as co-owner, with a company owned by the military dictatorship in Burma, of the Burmese subsidiary Rothmans of Pall Mall Myanmar, which shareholding BAT acquired when it took over Rothmans, because the income from this venture is supporting the brutal military regime; and calls on BAT to withdraw, and on the Government to encourage BAT to withdraw, from Burma.
