CHILD ABUSE IN THE NORTH WEST

  • Session: 1996-97
  • Date tabled: 11.03.1997
  • Primary sponsor: Hall, Mike
  • Sponsors:

That this House notes with grave concern the conviction of Keith Laverack for offences committed against children over many years and the terrible physical and psychological damage caused to those children who suffered at Laverack's hands; further notes that this is the latest in a long line of prominent cases of child abuse in the North West; and therefore calls upon the Secretary of State for Health to set up a wide ranging public inquiry into the extent of child abuse in the North West, with the intention of bringing the perpetrators of this evil crime to justice, to investigate the existing of paedophile rings in the region, and to ensure that the vulnerable children who are put into the care of local authorities are safe from physical and sexual abuse.
