PROPOSED CLOSURE OF THE GALLAHER LIMITED FACTORY IN HYDE TAMESIDE

  • Session: 1996-97
  • Date tabled: 14.01.1997
  • Primary sponsor: Pendry, Tom
  • Sponsors:

That this House deplores the decision of Gallaher Limited to announce the loss of 950 jobs from their Hyde factory in Tameside during Christmas week; calls upon the company to reconsider this decision, given that in 1993 it publicly stated that it would be concentrating its manufacturing output on Hyde as this is where its commercial and geographical strengths lay; expresses concern that the decision of the Government to grant Gallaher Limited at least รบ10 million to invest in a Northern Ireland site distorts fair market competition and will lead to a net reduction in United Kingdom employment; and calls upon the Government to provide the Tameside area of Greater Manchester with assistance to ensure that training and employment opportunities are made available to those workers who could be made redundant.

Amendment 398A1 - PROPOSED CLOSURE OF THE GALLAHER LIMITED FACTORY IN HYDE TAMESIDE;Amdt. line 1:

  • Session: 1996-97
  • Date tabled: 15.01.1997
  • Primary sponsor: Beggs, Roy
  • Sponsors:

leave out from `House' to second `and' in line 7, and insert `regrets that unfair competition within the EC tobacco industry, the adverse impact of tobacco product smuggling into the United Kingdom, the decline in demand for tobacco products influenced by excessive tax increases above the rate of inflation and anti-smoking campaigns have forced further rationalisation of cigarette manufacture within the United Kingdom, with the announced loss of 950 jobs at Hyde Factory in Tameside; welcomes the investment by Gallaher Ltd at their site in Ballymena, Co. Antrim; approves the decision to grant aid the necessary investment forced on the company by the need to rationalise cigarette production in the United Kingdom in order to remain competitive and to protect and retain as many jobs as possible in this industry.'.
