EC FRUIT AND VEGETABLE REGIME INTERVENTION SCHEME

  • Session: 1995-96
  • Date tabled: 13.12.1995
  • Primary sponsor: Jones, Nigel
  • Sponsors:

That this House notes that in 1994 through the EC Fruit and Vegetable Regime Intervention System 8,000 tonnes of apples were destroyed in the United Kingdom which would have been suitable for cider-making; recognises that this policy wastes sound fruit, causes environmental problems in its disposal, and costs the taxpayer money; and urges the Government to press the European Commission, in reviewing the Intervention System, to allow apples available through intervention to be purchased at a commercial rate by cider-makers and other manufacturers with any monetary difference made up by the Intervention Board.
