CANCELLATION OF NUCLEAR POWER PLANT CONSTRUCTION

  • Session: 1995-96
  • Date tabled: 12.12.1995
  • Primary sponsor: Simpson, Alan
  • Sponsors:

That this House welcomes the decision by British Energy to recognise that nuclear power is fundamentally uneconomic and to cancel any plans for new nuclear plants; appreciates that this decision is in line with the policy of the Labour Party as most recently enunciated by the honourable Member for Leeds West, the Official Opposition Spokesperson on Energy, at the Annual Conference of the Nuclear Free Local Authorities in Cardiff on 3rd November; believes that nuclear power generation and its attendant nuclear fuel chain has always been shrouded in secrecy and is environemntally hazardous and economically unsustainable; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to establish a forward thinking energy policy based on integrated planning, conservation and efficiency, sustainable technologies and decentralised control.
