KILLING OF ELEPHANT AT CRICKET ST THOMAS WILDLIFE CENTRE

  • Session: 1994-95
  • Date tabled: 11.01.1995
  • Primary sponsor: Parry, Robert
  • Sponsors:

That this House is appalled by the deliberate killing of a majestic Asian bull elephant, Sahib, one of only five in England and from an endangered species, at the Cricket St. Thomas Wildlife Centre, Somerset, which is operated in conjunction with the Mr Blobby Theme Park, understands that the local council urged that the elephant be moved to other accommodation and that management at the park admitted that Sahib could have been moved to another European zoo; believes that the destruction of this magnificent beast was made for economic reasons, as it is easier to run rides and fun houses than to look after wild animals; and calls upon the local council to revoke the park's licence in the interest of other animals.
