CLOSURE OF MAIN CROWN POST OFFICES

  • Session: 1993-94
  • Date tabled: 30.03.1994
  • Primary sponsor: Connarty, Michael
  • Sponsors:

That this House is deeply concerned at the closure of 650 Crown post office branches since the publication of the Monopolies and Mergers Commission report in 1988 and in particular at the closure of 120 Crown post office branches in London; commends the action by members of the Union of Communications Workers in their decision to call a day of action on 30th March including strike action and a lobby of Parliament in recognition of the loss of service to the public as well as the loss of jobs which have occurred; and calls on the Government to recognise that it is the public who campaign hardest to retain a main Crown post office scheduled for closure rather than accept a poorer quality of service from a franchised post office run by less qualified staff in supermarkets and other retail outlets.
