CRUELTY TO GREYHOUNDS

  • Session: 1993-94
  • Date tabled: 12.01.1994
  • Primary sponsor: Pickthall, Colin
  • Sponsors:

That this House commends BBC North's 'On the Line' documentary on cruelties in greyhound racing and, while recognising the importance of the sport for thousands of people, urges the Government and the National Greyhound Racing Club to act together to stop practices such as the baiting and feeding of dogs with live rabbits, the cruel disposal of many thousands of 'retired' or 'failed' dogs by export to Spain or for vivisection or by being maimed and dumped, and the use of black-market drugs to enable injured dogs to run; and further urges the Government to hold talks with the governments of Ireland and Spain to ensure that the treatment of greyhounds in and between all three countries is made humane.
