leave out from 'rules' to end and add 'but questions whether such evidence as exists establishes beyond doubt that the purpose of hinting foxes with hounds is not for pest control and queries whether those opposed to hunting would have the same reservations about gassing and shooting foxes when in the latter case the animal might not be killed outright but might have a painful and long-drawn-out death'.

FOXHUNTING

  • Session: 1991-92
  • Date tabled: 31.10.1991
  • Primary sponsor: Davies, Ron
  • Sponsors:

That this House welcomes the Mail on Sunday expose' of the widespread and flagrant abuses by members of the Quorn Fox Hounds of the Masters of Fox Hounds Association rules; believes the evidence now available establishes beyond question that the purpose of hunting live quarry with hounds is neither to control the numbers of potential pests nor to kill individual animals as humanely as possible but to kill animals for the purposes of entertainment; considers that this practice is incompatible with Britain's supposed status as a state which opposes cruelty to animals and therefore deprives Britain of moral authority on animal welfare issues of international concern; and concludes, therefore, that Parliament should act to outlaw the pursuit and killing of animals for entertainment and the sooner the better.
