That this House views with concern the fact that over 180,000 people die each year of coronary heart disease, the largest single recorded cause of death in the United Kingdom; notes that the Standing Medical Advisory Committee (SMAC) report Blood Cholesterol Testing - the cost-effectiveness of opportunistic cholesterol testing (1990), concludes that 'an elevated level of blood cholesterol is one of the chief factors which lead to an increased risk of coronary heart disease and that reduction of elevated blood cholesterol levels lessens the incidence of the disease'; and urges Her Majesty's Government to support the recommendation of the SMAC report that opportunistic blood cholesterol testing can make a cost-effective contribution to coronary heart disease prevention.
