Environment, Transport and Regional Affairs Select Committee Press Notice No. 19 of Session 1997-98 dated 13 January 1998

Environment Sub-committee

Following publication of the National Allotments Survey in December, the Environment Sub-committee has resolved to inquire into The Future for Allotments.

It will wish to examine the following:

- The value, quality and affordability of allotments;

- the extent of interest in allotment cultivation;

- the efficient use of allotment land;

- the effectiveness of statutory protection for allotment sites;

- the roles and responsibilities of DETR, local authorities and other bodies concerned with the promotion, allocation and maintenance of allotment land; and

- other matters which may arise in the course of questioning.

Under the terms of the Standing Order by which it is appointed, the Sub-committee is obliged to consider the above matters primarily in so far as they relate to England. However, relevant experience of other parts of the United Kingdom will be taken into account.

Written evidence will be accepted in either disk format (WordPerfect 5.1/ASCII) or typescript: submissions on disk should be accompanied by a single hard copy. Witnesses without access to a typewriter are respectfully requested to take particular care that submissions are concise and legible. Memoranda exceeding the preferred length of six pages should be preceded by an executive summary. Pictorial evidence will be welcome and should be available for reproduction by the Committee, if required.

Memoranda should be submitted by Friday 31 January 1998 to Ms Payne (Clerk), The Environment Sub-committee, at 7 Millbank, London SW1P 3JA. It is expected that oral evidence will be heard by the Sub-committee in a Committee Room of the House during February.
