It is our longstanding policy to oppose the death penalty in all circumstances in every country. Its use undermines human dignity, has no value as a deterrent and any miscarriage of justice in capital cases is irreparable. We continue to raise this issue with the government of Bahrain at senior levels.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office and our Embassy in Bahrain closely monitor a number of cases, including the ones mentioned in his question. We continue to encourage the government of Bahrain to deliver on its international and domestic human rights commitments. We have raised concerns both in public and in private, by having frank discussions including at the most senior levels. The Prime Minister, my Rt Hon. Friend the Member for Maidenhead (Mrs May) was very clear during her visit that we want to see Gulf states embed international norms and see through essential reforms.
