Use of copies supplied by the Parliamentary Archives
This notice explains the uses which may be made of copies of items held by the Parliamentary Archives. Amongst other things, it sets out the terms governing the use which may be made of a copy supplied by the Parliamentary Archives. In submitting a request to be supplied with a copy of an item you agree to comply with these terms.
The copy may only be used for non-commercial research or private study. No further copies may be made from the supplied copy. This applies irrespective of the form in which the further copy is made and whether it is of the whole or part of the item concerned.
Where the supplied copy is of an item in which copyright is owned by either House of Parliament, the contents of the item may be quoted provided the context of the use is a non-commercial purpose and a suitable acknowledgement is made. Information may be obtained from the Parliamentary Archives about the form of the acknowledgement. Any other use of the item or the copy is prohibited unless a separate licence for the use has been granted. This may be applied for by completion of either the application for use of images in a non-broadcasting format (
PDF 178 KB) (eg publications, exhibitions, multimedia), or in a TV/Film broadcast ( PDF 130 KB).
Where the supplied copy is of an item in which copyright is owned by someone other than either House of Parliament, you must obtain permission from the copyright owner before using the item for any purpose other than non-commercial research or private study. Where you use the copy or the item in a way that infringes copyright, you agree to indemnify the Parliamentary Archives in respect of any damages or costs incurred by it in respect of that infringement. If permission is obtained from the copyright owner for the use of the item for any purpose other than non-commercial research or private study, you must contact the Parliamentary Archives and obtain its permission before using the supplied copy for that purpose.
Citations of Records
Users are asked to cite records using the new reference number for each record which can be found in our online catalogue, Portcullis. The new reference can also usually be found labelled on the document in full. Folio, membrane or page numbers should be added as required. There is no longer any need to provide a text description of the series or date. For example:

Citations of Parliamentary Publications
Printed acts (ie not the original act), printed Journals, the Official Report (Hansard), and sessional/command papers should be cited as for any other publication, as these are not unique to the Archives and can be found in official paper collections in libraries. For example:
