Death of Lord Bilston

Labour life peer, Lord Bilston, has died aged 71

Lord Bilston joined the Lords in 2005. He last spoke in the Lords chamber on 26 March 2013, when he asked a question following a govenment statement on the Mid Staffordshire Foundation Trust Inquiry.

He was MP for Wolverhampton South East for 18 years (1987-05). During this time he served on several Commons committees including:

  • Finance and Services (1997-2005)
  • Education (1992-94)
  • Education, Science and the Arts (1989-92).

Before entering Parliament he spent 20 years as Wolverhampton City Councillor (1966-86). He was elected to the council at the age of 22. Lord Bilston also served as president of the Bilston Community Association from 1987 until his death.
