Minister of State for Work and Pensions, Steve Webb, made a statement in the House of Commons on Thursday 6 December on the uprating of social security benefits and pensions for 2013-14.
Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Liam Byrne, responded on behalf of the Opposition.
The schedule of the new benefit rates was deposited in the libraries of both the House of Commons and the House of Lords.
Oral statements are made after Question Time (or at 11am on a Friday) and after any Urgent Questions.
Statements normally relate to matters of policy or government actions. At the end of a statement, MPs can respond or question the government minister on its contents.
