Urgent Question on Nuclear Industry Safety

19 May 2011

Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Chris Huhne, responded to an urgent question asked by Paul Flynn, Labour MP for Newport West, in the House of Commons on Wednesday 18 May on the implications of the Weightman Report.

The Weightman Report

The Weightman Report is an interim report, independently produced by Dr Mike Weightman and the Office of Nuclear Regulation.

The interim report examines the immediate lessons learned by the UK nuclear industry following the events at Japan's Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear site in March 2011.

The final report is due in September and is expected to cover the nuclear industry in more detail.

Watch and read the urgent question and the views expressed by MPs on Parliament TV and in Commons Hansard.

Urgent question

Urgent questions are asked at the end of Question Time. If something has happened, normally a matter of public importance, which an MP believes requires an immediate answer from a government minister, they may apply to the Speaker to ask an urgent question.

If the Speaker agrees, the question will be asked at the end of Question Time.
