Statement on humanitarian emergency responses

16 June 2011

Secretary of State for International Development, Andrew Mitchell, made a statement to the House of Commons on Wednesday 15 June on the publication of the Government's response to the review into humanitarian emergency responses.

Watch and read the statement and the views expressed by MPs on Parliament TV and in Commons Hansard. Shadow Minister for International Development, Mark Lazarowicz, responded to the statement on behalf of the Opposition.

Humanitarian and Emergency Response Review

The review was carried out by Lord (Paddy) Ashdown who led a taskforce of humanitarian experts from inside and outside government to review all aspects of how the UK Government responds to disasters and works with the international community to speed up the delivery of aid.

The review was published in March 2011 and made several recommendations for reform. The Government has published its response to the review. The review and the response can be found on the Department for International Development website.

Oral statements

Oral statements are made after Question Time (or at 11am on a Friday). Statements normally relate to matters of policy or government actions. At the end of a statement, MPs can respond or question the government minister on its contents.
