Debate on plans for a high-speed rail network

01 April 2011

Kelvin Hopkins, Labour MP for Luton North, moved a Backbench Business debate in Westminster Hall on Thursday 31 March on the subject of high-speed rail.

High Speed 2

High Speed 2 (HS2) is a proposed high-speed railway providing new services between London and Scotland.

The project is being developed by High Speed Two (HS2) Ltd, a company established by the Government in January 2009.

Minister of State for Rail, Theresa Villiers, responded to the debate on behalf of the Government.

Watch and read the views expressed by MPs during the debate on Parliament TV and in Commons Hansard. Find current parliamentary material on railways in the Topics section on the Parliament website and previous statement on high-speed rail.

Westminster Hall debates

Westminster Hall adjournment debates allow MPs to discuss issues of local or personal interest which rarely have time to be debated in the main Chamber of the House of Commons. MPs can discuss a variety of issues and receive a response from a government Minister.
