Digital Economy Bill: Lords committee stage

07 January 2010

Members of the House of Lords began the line by line examination of the Digital Economy Bill on 6 January

Clauses 1-2 of the Bill were discussed - covering issues including the duties of the communications regulator Ofcom and the role of Ofcom in reporting on communications infrastructure and internet domain names.

Detailed line by line examination of the separate parts (clauses and schedules) of the Bill takes place during committee stage. Any Member of the Lords can take part.

Every clause of the Bill has to be agreed to and votes on the amendments (proposals for change) can take place.

All proposed amendments can be discussed and there is no time limit – or guillotine - on discussion of amendments.

The second day of committee stage takes place on 12 January.
