MEPs appear before EU codecision inquiry

09 June 2009

The House of Lords European Union Select Committee inquiry into the implications of codecision for national parliamentary scrutiny continues at 4.30pm, when the Committee takes evidence from former MEP Richard Corbett and Arlene McCarthy MEP.

The codecision procedure is the main legislative procedure by which law can be adopted in the European Community, with the European Parliament sharing legislative power equally with the Council of the European Union.

Areas the inquiry is focusing on include the codecision procedure itself, the role of governments and the EU institutions and scrutiny procedures in national parliaments. The aim of the inquiry is better scrutiny and therefore, ultimately, better legislation.
