Political Parties and Elections Bill: committee stage

07 May 2009

Line by line examination of the Political Parties and Elections Bill continued in the House of Lords on 6 May.

Suggested changes to the Bill - on trade union donations to political parties, caps on political donations, joining the electoral register and more - were discussed during the fourth day of committee stage.

During Grand Committee (which takes place outside the Lords Chamber), line by line examination of the Bill takes place - as per the committee stage of a Bill in the Lords Chamber. Every amendment suggested is discussed and the Bill can be changed but voting does not take place.

The Bill makes some amendments to the regulation of party funding and election expenditure that is set out in the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000.
